French artist (1798–1863) who takes a place in the first rank of painters in the Romantic tradition and whose mastery of color and technique inspired both the Impressionist and Symbolist schools. His best known work is the stirring 1830 patriotic tableau ‘Liberty Leading the People.’ ALS in French, signed “E. Delacroix,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, no date. In part (translated): “Please send me the drawings in question. I will return them tomorrow or the day after and tell you my opinion, whether it’s harsh or not. I am very glad to be able to oblige you on this occasion. Please ask the author of the drawings to pardon my having taken so long.” Light creasing and wrinkling, intersecting folds, and spots of toning, otherwise fine condition.
