Eugène Ionesco's works oscillate between representation and abstraction; in bold colors, he focuses on human conflicts and contradictions, sometimes of aggressive sometimes of subtly humorous nature. His prints fetch up to 1,200 euro at international auctions

Drawn in simple contouring, black line and designed in bright colors several shapes are shown in the center of the image, some of which are abstract, but some have figurative character. Additionally four circular shapes are to be recognized in the corners. They are surely the ghosts with their moons mentioned in the title.

The lithograph in colors is signed lower right in pencil ‘Eugène Ionesco’ and inscribed lower left in pencil ‘H.C.’. At the lower left edge the sheet is faintly visible discolored. The condition is very good. The image measures 44 x 26.3 cm, the sheet 56 x 38.2 cm.

Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994)

Eugène Ionesco was born in 1909 in the Romanian town of Slatina, but in 1913 the family moved to Paris. Early the artist showed an interest in literature and studied from 1928 French at the University of Bucharest. Besides, he wrote poetry, articles for the feuilleton and literary criticism. After studying Ionesco taught in schools until 1938 and then went back to France to do a doctorate. After a brief return to Romania in 1942, he moved permanently to France, where then in 1948 his first play was created, which was first performed in 1950. In the 1980s, Ionesco became ill with depression, and began painting as therapy. Also many prints origin from this period. (fea)
