Euclidis [Euclid], Elementorum Libri XV
Euclidis Euclid , Elementorum Libri XV. Una Cum Scholijs Antiquis, translated by Federico Commandino Urbinate Nuper in Latin (Pisa: Comillo Franceschini, 1572), first edition, 256 pages, illustrations, vellum, bound in leather with gold lettering and decorations on spine, folio (8.75” x 12.5”). Federico, Commandino Urbinate, was the first scholar to translate this ancient work of Euclid (c. 323-283 B.C.), the foremost mathematician of the prestigious Alexandrian Academy, from the original Greek into Latin. One of the most historically significant books ever written, Elements is the oldest mathematical text still in use today, and this translation is considered the best. The study of Euclid’s monumental work, written 23 centuries ago, has perhaps been eclipsed only by that of the Bible. One bookplate has been pasted over an earlier one inside the front cover. This rare historical treasure is in good condition (remarkable for its age of 435 years) with moderate, very old, damp staining on the paper and moderate staining and wear on the binding.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
