Ethiopia (struck at the Paris Mint, France), matte proof birr, EE1892 (1900), Menelik II, NGC PF62 Matte. KM-19. Lightly toned (slightly deeper around details) with just a couple small marks, desirable as a specially prepared proof in matte texture for a general issue in thaler size meant to replace the Maria Theresa thalers circulating in that area. Menelik II was an important historical figure who, in addition to claiming to be a descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, united the various groups of Abyssinia and threw off Italian colonial rule, establishing the independent Ethiopia that exists today. NGC #5906063-001.
