Ethel Merman Personally Handwritten & Signed Thank You Note
Ethel Merman Personally Handwritten & Signed Thank You Note - Ethel Merman, the iconic legendary performer who literally never needed a microphone, even in her largest theaters to be heard "in the cheap seats", was as over-the-top and both beloved, and impossible as the characters she portrayed. Among her greatest hits was Irving Berlin's "Call Me Madam". She starred in the hit Broadway musical in 1950, and won the Tony Award. In 1951 she was asked to reprise her role in the motion picture. It was at that time that her good friends actor Van Johnson and his wife Evie sent her a huge basket of her favorite flowers to congratulate her for her role before the start of production. The film was a hit and she went on to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress, which was something that Van had predicted when he sent the flowers! This is a wonderful rare handwritten note from Ethel Merman on Beverly Hills Hotel stationary sent to Van and Evie thanking them for the flowers just before she was about to start filming at Twentieth Century Fox Studios. It also includes the original envelope hand-addressed by Miss Merman to "Mr. and Mrs. Van Johnson". She also handwrote her name on the top of the return address. The envelope is postmarked from Beverly Hills and dated 1952 and includes the original cancelled three-cent stamp. This personal handwritten and signed card comes directly from Van Johnson's personal collection, and includes a Letter of Provenience from the Johnson’s daughter, Schuyler Johnson along with a copy of her famous controversial cover story article “My Life As A Hollywood Princess”, about her trials and tribulations growing up in Beverly Hills with a superstar father and extended “family” with some of the most famous celebrities in the world.
