ALS, six pages, 5.75 x 7.75, Hickory Hill letterhead, November 14, 1971. Letter to Newbold Noyes, the editor of The Washington Evening Star, in full: “I am writing to tell you of the deep distress The Evening Star has caused my family and me. Twice recently The Star has printed disparaging stories about my son Bobby. Both times the facts were overlooked in favor of something more sensational. It is hard enough to bring up teenagers in these fact-changing times. Unwarranted, unfair and inaccurate publicity only compound the difficulties. The statements about Bobby leaving his family, dropping out of school and wanting to get married are untrue and your reporters would have discovered as much had they bothered to check with Bobby or me. Bobby attends The Palfrey Street School in Watertown, Massachusetts, boards with Professor Brodie of Harvard University and his family, has no plans of marrying Kim Kelly, and we look forward to his frequent weekends at home. But perhaps the cruelest suggestion in the piece under Robin Sloan’s name was about my supposed disappointment in Bobby. Mr. Noyes, nothing could be further from the truth. You wouldn’t have the time to read, nor I the time to write about how proud I am of Bobby: a highly idealistic, thoughtful, intelligent and sensitive boy who is adored by his older and younger brothers and sisters and who has already evinced a deep concern for those less fortunate than himself. Bobby bears a great name and he will grow into it despite the unfair and inaccurate reporting of Betty Beale and Robin Sloan. It seems to me that writing about youngsters should impose a particular responsibility on both writers and editors. I can only hope that in the future your paper will not print stories about Bobby or other young people without first checking the facts.” In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner of each page.

Also included: a typed copy of Noyes’s response to Kennedy, defending the article by Beale but apologizing for the Sloan report, explaining that it was a syndicate column that they publish but do not control: “I am sorry we were not alert enough to delete this piece of gossip”; a photocopy of the referenced Beale article; a “Note for Library File on Robert Kennedy, Jr.,” affirming the boy’s current situation; and a typed note to Noyes from assistant managing editor Charles Seib, offering details on both Kennedy stories.
