This document relates to a meeting of proprietors for the Connecticut Settlement in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. In part: "<I>... Lastly whether the formed decision be disannulled or not, I say throw all the favour that is possible into this settlement, and we will maintain the ground, be ye active and nervous. This is a rich and valuable Country let us not be fooled, or frightened out of it. To the care and perusal of my friend Zera Beach Esq. To be by him delivered to Dav. Hamilton, if opportunity offers, to the intent that the same, may be laid before the proprietors meeting the . . . instant without fail. I am your hon'l Serv't, Ethan Allen. A true copy of Z Beach... Dear Sir, I received the foregoing this day shall attend the meeting if possible. I am Zera Beach...</B></I>" The reverse has the address of a Major William Judd of Farmington and what appears to be a land survey sketch. <BR><BR>Ethan Allen (1738-1789) came out of retirement in 1786, with the promise of land, to aid settlers in this area of Pennsylvania who, since the 1760s, had bought grants from Connecticut Pennsylvania wanted the settlers to pay them for the same deeds. When they refused, Philadelphia asked Connecticut to revoke the legitimacy of the deeds and, in 1783, Connecticut did. The settlers still refused to pay for the deeds a second time. Allen raised a militia and offered a compromise to avoid a fight. The state agreed and, in March 1787, Pennsylvania passed the Confirming Act that formed the independent county of Wyoming and recognized the land titles.
