Antique Falling-Block Single Shot Rifle, by Ethan Allen & Co., #2620, .44 RF cal., 26'' half round-half octagonal barrel, with dovetailed German-silver blade front and adjustable-leaf rear sights unmarked, and has a unique takedown feature via a small threaded pin through top of frame, the latter marked ''E. Allen & Co., Worcester, Mass./Allen's Pat. Sept. 16, 1860''; steel receiver with under-lever that actions the dropping breech with automatic cartridge extraction, and also acts as a triggerguard with latch on bottom frame tang; varnished walnut forend with a steel cap, and matching buttstock having a curved steel buttplate with hinged door opening to trap in butt for jointed cleaning rod (not present). Mfg'd ca. 1860-70s, in a quantity of 2,000 or fewer guns. Condition is very good. Barrel shows a smooth blue-brown tone with perhaps 15% original blue on side flats and protected areas; receiver, lever and hammer are a smooth brown patina with traces of case hardening colors; forend shows scattered age and use marks, and dulled varnish. Buttstock is smooth with a secure crack at wrist and very professional wood repairs at top tang, buttplate toe, and where a sling swivel was originally fitted below, and retains all of its varnish with lovely grain and color. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with deep rifling. This Allen rifle, with its largest caliber offered, large rounded frame, and takedown feature, is considered scarce. Est.: $500-$950. (Antique)
