German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet ‘The Desert Fox’ for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. DS, in German, signed in pencil, “Rommel,” one page, 8.25 x 11.5, March 5, 1939. Untranslated four-item document, signed at the conclusion in blue pencil by Rommel as Oberst und Kommandeur (Colonel and Commander). Document bears secretarial notations on the reverse. In fine, clean, condition, with a central horizontal fold and punch holes to left edge.
