Putti holding a garland of flowers. Bell-shaped base. Light-grey stoneware, cream-white, beige, blue and brownish-green glazes. On the lower surface the transcription states: "IN ORDER GIVEN OF YOUR ROYAL SOVEREIGNTY OF THE GRAND DUCHESS OF HESSEN AND THE RHINE." Marks: original paper label "Waechtersb... Abbott. Chr. Riegel was one of the most outstanding German goldsmiths of the early 20th Century. He received his training in Munich from the renowned Fritz von Miller. In 1907 Riegel was appointed by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hessen and the Rhine to the Darmstadt artist colony, which he remained connected with for many years.
