German expressionist painter and printmaker (1880–1938), one of the artists whose work led to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th century art. His work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis and in 1937 more than 600 of his works were sold or destroyed. In 1938 he committed suicide. ALS in German, signed “E. L. Kirchner,” one page, 6 x 7.5, September 2, 1912. Letter to to Maria Schmidt(-Hell) in Magdeburg, wife of the art historian Paul Ferdinand Schmidt, then assistant director at the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum and later director of the Municipal Collections at Dresden. "That is a fantastic idea from you and I am pleased and honoured to do the work for you. Please give me the size it should be.” In fine condition.
