(NBC, 1952-1956) A puppet used by Ernie Kovacs in many episodes of his groundbreaking TV show. In the early 1950s, TV was still experimenting with formats and styles, and "variety shows" containing a range of content were popular. Ernie Kovacs was known for being experimental and pushing the envelope, with some of his most notable sketches using tilting stages, camera tricks, and surrealist humor. While the "Nairobi Trio" was his most popular recurring sketch, Kovacs used many recurring bits--including the serialized puppet show "The Kapusta Kid in Outer Space," a spoof of popular kids' space-themed shows, which surviving episodes document as running from at least 1955 to 1956. This puppet is Kapusta, the lead character, operated and voiced by Kovacs himself. He's wearing a "space helmet" outfit which can be seen on the June 27, 1956 episode. In addition to our ScreenUsed COA, this puppet comes with a COA from the Hollywood Entertainment Museum, which received it as a donation from Kovacs' widow Edie Adams in 1992, and a DVD of an episode on which it was featured.
