Ernie Bushmiller - Original Comic Strip Art for Fritzi Ritz Sunday dated 8-1-43 (United Features Syndicate, 1943). The creation of cartoonist Larry Whittington, Fritzi Ritz debuted in the New York Evening World in 1922. Lured by what seemed at the time a more attractive offer, Whittington departed for comic strip obscurity after only a few years, replaced in 1925 with a young Ernie Bushmiller. Bushmiller immediately made the strip his own, introducing a succession of supporting characters, including Fritzi's 7-year-old niece. In a rare instance of a supporting player replacing the star, Fritzi's niece, the irresistible Nancy, soon became the headliner, relegating her aunt to the status of a mere parental figure. Indeed, the strip eventually even changed it's name to Nancy to reflect the new status quo. However, as is clearly seen in the example offered here, Fritzi Ritz was a strong strip in its own right, highlighted by a beautiful lead character and Bushmiller's impeccable draftsmanship. This strip, told entirely in pantomime, is a fabulous example of Bushmiller's early work. Measuring approximately 23" x 15.25" overall, this page is in excellent condition. The title stat shows a little bit of discoloration, but this is a very minor defect on an otherwise pristine piece. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
