Extremely rare original watercolor painting of Ajaccio in Corsica done by Thesiger on an off-white 12 x 9.75 sheet affixed to an identical size board. Painting is done from a hilltop above the commune with water and mountains in the background. Signed in the lower left corner, in watercolor, “Ernest Thesiger, Ajaccio, 1906.” Consignor indicates this work was given to a socialite friend of Thesiger’s in the 1920s. Thin strips of edge toning, scattered light toning and foxing, and a few small edge tears and creases, otherwise fine condition.

Though best remembered as the renegade mad scientist Dr. Praetorius in The Bride of Frankenstein—a man with no regard human life or ethics of any kind—Thesiger’s original love was painting. Having attended art school, he was gifted enough as an artist to hold a 1906 exhibition of his work entitled ‘Spain, Itally and Corsica’—the very event from which this painting originated. A scarce and beautifully depicted scene created by Frankenstein’s mentor!
