Extremely rare original signed pencil and ballpoint sketch of Winnie the Pooh holding a jar of honey under one arm and reaching into the jar with the other on an off-white 4 x 3 card, signed underneath “Ernest H. Shepard 9/1/70.” In fine condition, with neatly trimmed upper edge, and scattered faint toning. Winnie the Pooh sketches by Shepard are exceptionally rare as he famously regretted illustrating the A. A. Milne books as he felt that they overshadowed his subsequent career.

Shepard agreed to illustrate Milne’s heartwarming childhood ursine after the artist and author had worked together on When We Were Young, a successful book of poems. It was a decision that Shepard grew to regret, as he believed that his work on Winnie-The-Pooh, Now We Are Six, and The House At Pooh Corner—which he saw as a simple sideline project—eventually overshadowed his creations for Punch, a British satirical publication. Although always pleased with Shepard's work, Milne and Shepard were never close, and Shepard typically declined requests to sketch his famous inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood.
