English artist and book illustrator (1879–1976) known especially for his human-like animals in illustrations for Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne. Rare ALS, one page, 5.25 x 7, Woodmancote letterhead, October 11, 1960. Letter to German book publisher Frank Hermann. In full: “I sent you a rough sketch for the jacket for C. R. story book. I think it is a good idea to introduce all the Pooh characters in a suitable background. I have suggested that the lettering might be on a panel but there would be no objection to it being in strong black overlaid, as in the world of C. R. & Pooh. The colours will of course be stronger than in this chalk rough.” In fine condition, with a pencil notation near top and some light wrinkles and creases. The Christopher Robin Story Book to which Shepard refers to in this letter was published by Methuen in 1960. This letter is rich in content, with Shepard still providing illustrations for the books, despite his resentment of the characters that would overshadowthe rest of his career.
