AQS on a 5 x 6.5 off-white sheet, signed “E. A. Shackleton.” Shackleton writes the final verse from “God Save the King”, “Dawn lands for youth to reap, Dim Lands where empires sleep, And all that dolphined deep, Where the ships swing.” At the top of the page, Shackleton explains his slightly shaky writing, “In the train so difficult to write.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold, a hint of light toning, and mounting remnants to second integral page.
It’s quite interesting that Shackleton selected not only James Elroy Flecker’s poem to quote, but also a verse relating to exploration for one’s King and country. Shackleton's death in 1922 marked the end of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, a period of discovery characterized by journeys of geographical and scientific exploration in a largely unknown continent, without any of the benefits of modern travel methods or communication.
