TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics letterhead, December 17, 1928. Letter to Hiram Bingham, the president of the National Aeronautic Association, agreeing to serve on the Collier Trophy Committee unless otherwise prevented. In part: "There are tentative but indefinite plans for me to accompany the Aircraft Squadrons Scouting Fleet as far as Key West and perhaps to Panama, leaving Hampton Roads about 5 January. Unless the above-mentioned plans should interfere, I shall appreciate the honor and the opportunity of serving as a member of the Collier Trophy Committee." In fine condition, with file and staple holes to the top edge. Accompanied by an onionskin copy of Bingham's original letter to King, dated December 15, 1928.

The Collier Trophy was awarded annually ‘for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year.’ King was invited to sit on the committee that would decide the 1928 winner; that year it was presented to the Aeronautics branch of the United States Department of Commerce for development of airways and navigation facilities.
