TLS, one onionskin page, 8.5 x 11, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula letterhead, March 26, 1960. Letter to Joseph Lord of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. In part: “On receipt of this letter will you please send a cheque for $7,500,00…made out to Internal Revenue Service, Baltimore, Maryland. to Alfred Rice … Please debit my current cheque account for this cheque and transfer in addition $7,500,00…to my special tax account.” In fine condition, with punch and staple holes to top edge, two small ink notations, and an office stamp to right side. In 1959, the Finca Vigia became crowded with guests and tourists, as Hemingway, beginning to become unhappy with life there, considered a permanent move to Idaho. That same year he bought a home overlooking the Big Wood River, outside of Ketchum. In the wake of Fidel Castro's revolution, the Finca Vigia was expropriated by the Cuban government after the Bay of Pigs Invasion, (two months before Hemingway's death), complete with Hemingway's collection of books, art, and papers.
