Ernest Hemingway TLS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Ernest Hemingway typed letter signed and dated 23 August 1939 as he was writing ''For Whom the Bell Tolls''. Composed from Key West, Hemingway writes to a ''Dear Mr. Knoxton,'' asking for a bill for any overtime and explaining that Otto Bruce will pick up the boys instead of himself because he does not want to be distracted until his book is finished. In part, ''…You can bill me for whatever overtime the boys have. I would love to come and pick them up myself and have a chance to stay with you but it work out better this year for Otto Bruce to come…I can't conscientiously go through N.Y. now without attending to a lot of accumulate business. And am trying not to think of anything else until get [sic] this book finished…'' Pencil notes in an unknown hand at bottom, naming a ranch and its location -- Cook City, Montana, dating the pickup of the boys by Otto Bruce, and recording the date and amount of a bill. Single page letter measuring 8.5'' x 11'' has expected folds, overall in very good condition.
