Ernest Hemingway ALS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Ernest Hemingway autograph letter signed, dated 10 March 1954. Hemingway writes to Kit Figgis in the aftermath of the January 1954 Ugandan safari in which Ernest and Mary Hemingway were injured in two separate plane crashes. In part, ''Dear Kit: It is about even money whether we beat this one...Miss Mary is OK but nerves a little spotty...Only Dogs have wings and not for long. The funniest thing I remember was that Miss Mary believed that the Deck was a safe and beautiful place and when I told her if you lived on the deck you died on the deck she thought I was the conservative type. She still does not believe that Pranging Ndeges [aircraft] is dangerous. Just as she believes Mr. Simba simply collapses anyway you shoot at him (actually he does not). Well we all draw our cards and 5 aces is a lovely sight even when you know it is not true...If I should go for ----- remember what a lovely thing you did to dress up in such a lovely way that night when I was beat to the wide and needed some morale. I will never forget that, and so far...I have never known a more gracious act...But the lousy kidneys rupture etc...As you know we are all the Tight Typpes type (It is fun to write to you) like H Bogart (if that is his real name) (Doubt It)...Perhaps in our our circles (where the compliments are miniscule) I might say it straight that I admire you greatly and love repeat love you in the highest traditions...and hope that you will always be a good and faithful wife to your husband...EH...I think we are all easy winners. But do not bet the horse. He has a bad name REMORSE''. Two page pencil letter measures 7'' x 10.25''. In very good condition with mailing folds and minor chips.
