Swiss-born American composer (1880–1959) best known for his large-scale, often Jewish-inflected chamber, orchestral, and choral works. ALS, one page, 8.25 x 11, October 26, 1955. Letter to Otmar Meisel, in full: “I am certainly touched by your kind letter and appreciation and I thank you for it. I did not know that my music was ever performed in Germany! My wife was born in Hamburg. I am sending you a good biography, only it reaches only 1948, and a list of my published works.” Bloch adds a handwritten postscript at the conclusion, “Tomorrow I leave for Portland for a probable surgical operation.” In fine condition, with trivial creasing to edges, and a uniform block of toning from previous display. Accompanied by the aforementioned biography and list of published works, as well as the original mailing envelope, addressed in Bloch’s own hand.
