The present vintage print shows a picture of an advertising column taken by Erich Lessing in Bonn in 1962. At that time, all pillars of the town were decorated with the words ‘Germany greets France’, in order to remind of a state visit by the French president Charles de Gaulle. Interestingly, Lessing has also captured a policeman, watching the scene from behind. The thoughtful composition of the present work is a characteristic example of Lessing’s photographic works of the postwar period.

The photograph verso reveals the copyright stamp ‘© Erich Lessing – magnum stamp’, a second stamp ‘POLITIQUE EXTÉRIEURE’, the archive number ‘62-15-6/31‘ and further handwritten notes. The photo corners show minimal creases and blemishes with small losses of material, due to age. There are also a number of light superficial handling and pressure marks. The image size is equal to the sheet size of 29.6 x 20.6 cm.
