The painting presented here was created by Austrian artist Erhard Amadeus Dier around 1930. Shown is a caricatural genre scene, executed in loose brushwork. A painter and his female scholars painting a nude are caught unprepared by a peasant with his donkey.



The painting is signed ‘E. Amadeus-Dier’. The varnish shows horizontal and vertical rubbing of the surface, as well as rubbing long the edges due to the framing. There is a small color spot in the upper margin, on verso the outer edges show old traces of glue. The painting appears to be in a good overall impression. The image measures 48 x 64 cm. The framed dimensions are 58.5 x 74.5 cm. The frame is lightly stained.



Erhard Amadeus Dier (1893-1969)

The Austrian painter Erhard Amadeus Dier was born 1893 in Vienna. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he studied under Josef Jungwirth and Camillo Sitte. He first worked as an illustrator. En passant he painted portraits and animal images and was also active as a porcelain painter.
