Equipment Worn on Byrd's First Antarctic Trip
Equipment Carried and Worn on Byrd's First Antarctic Expedition by Chief Engineer Thomas B. Mulroy. When we recently opened this box of material, it was the first time these articles had seen the light of day since they were used as visuals for a 1959 television show called "Little America Scrapbook." Retired Commander Mulroy appeared on this episode about equipment used on the trip and he then boxed them up and sealed the box, writing a list of its contents on the outside Kraft paper wrapping as follows: "In this Package are Antarctic Expedition 1928-1930 gear consisting of 1-Pair Seal Skin Pants; 1-Rabbit Skin Cap; 1-Pair Black Bear Skin Gloves (mittens); 1-Pair Seal Skin Mutlocks [sic]; 1-Pair Carabou [sic] Moccasins; 1-Pair Indian Moccasins; 1-Hunting Knife; 1-Lapland Knife; 1-Pocket Compass; 1-Piece Rock Antarctic; 1-Ear Drum of a Blue Whale. 6/12/59 T.B.M." Also included is a script for the show. This likely may be the largest group of gear from this famous expedition still in private hands and would certainly make a fine display or exhibit. Original box, wrapping, and packing included.
