Enoch Wood Perry (1831-1915) Oil on Canvas
Enoch Wood Perry (1831-1915), Vernal Falls, Yosemite Valley (1863), oil on canvas, 42 x 36 inches, signed and dated lower right.

In late July 1863, Enoch Wood Perry, along with writer Fitz Hugh Ludlow, painters Albert Bierstadt and Virgil Williams, and geologist John Hewston embarked on a six-week journey into the Yosemite Valley. Well-documented by Ludlow and in newspaper accounts, their trip was also portrayed in Virgil Williams’ famous painting entitled On the Mariposa Trail, which depicts Williams’ four companions along the Merced River.

Vernal Falls, Yosemite Valley, painted ten years before Yosemite became a National Park, is believed to be the first-ever painting of this landmark.
