Engraved and inscribed Colt SAA revolver, .38 WCF cal., 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, smooth ivory grips, #288896. The inscription on the back strap of this gun reads “Ranger Wm. E. Cooper, Presented by M.O.P. R. Y. Lines”. The gun is in overall excellent condition as custom engraved and refinished showing approx. 95% blue and approx. 97% case colors, crisp action, good bore overall, finely accomplished scroll engraving with consignor tag indicating engraving by legendary Cole Agee; beautifully grained yellow thick ivory grips fitted to this revolver likely at the time of its custom engraving. The revolver is accompanied by an old belt knife by Erik Frost and metal scabbard with leather insert and inscription “William E. Cooper T.R.F.”. A 1996 letter from the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum indicates research of the Railroad Special Texas Ranger Records for 1922-1935 where copies of Cooper’s commissions were made and are included with this lot. This information indicates Cooper was first enlisted in Austin, Texas on October 30, 1933 with the second enlistment noting renewal on May 29, 1935. The documentation notes that Ranger Cooper was appointed a Special Officer for the M.O.P. lines (Missouri Pacific Railroad Co.). Indication from the documentation is that Cooper served in this position from October, 1933 to expiration of his second term on May 28, 1937. Est.: $7,500-$15,000.
