Engraved Walther PPK Semi-Automatic Pistol with Rankin Letter

This is a beautiful example of an engraved Walther PPK, semi-automatic pistol. The pistol has been highly engraved with the traditional, deep chiseled, relief Germanic Oak Leaf and Acorn type engraving mixed with a geometric border. The engraving covers over 98% of the pistol. This pattern is very similar to several of the special order engraved Walthers shown in "Walther Volume II, Engraved, Presentation and Standard Walther Pistols" by Rankin. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the frame with the last three digits, "316" correctly scratched on the inside of the slide. The slide is marked with the full Walther factory two line address and caliber markings followed by "Mod. PPK" in a small circle. The right side of the slide, frame and barrel all show the correct early "CrownN" proof marks, as used until approximately April 1940. The slide is fitted with the standard sights and 60 degree safety. It has the standard mottled brown Walther one-piece plastic grips, with "WALTHER" inside a at the top of each grip. It is complete with a "Walther/PPK 7,65mm" marked magazine which has also been engraved on the underside of the base plate. With a signed letter from James Rankin, author, stating that the pistol is Zella-Mehlis production, and features full oak leaf and acorn pattern engraving. It does not state whether the factory performed the engraving work.

Manufacture: Walther
Model: PPK
BBL: 3 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 7.65 mm auto
Finish: blue
Grips: brown plastic checkered
Serial Number: 242316K

Very fine as embellished with 95% of the refinished blue overall with only minor edge and high spot wear. The markings are clear and sharp and so is the engraving. The grips are in fine condition with nice distinct checkering and markings on the side, however they do show some warpage on the upper and lower front edges of the grips, which is typical for early Walther PPK pistols.
