Engraved Stephen Grant Side lock Double Barrel Shotgun
Single bead sight on a solid rib marked "PATENT / EJECTOR" and "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS 67th ST. JAMES'S STREET LONDON" followed by the number "1". Stephen Grant was apprenticed to Kavanagh of Dublin before working with Charles Lancaster and Thomas Boss in London. The right barrel is marked "FLUID PRESSED STEEL" and the left barrel is marked "SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S". Crown over "V" and "GP" proofs on the barrel flats and two "crown / V" proofs on the water table. 2 3/4 inch chambers, chokes gauge at modified/improved cylinder with ejectors. The action features an extensive tight scroll engraving with "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS" marked on each side lock. The scrollwork extends to the trigger guard and break lever. Double triggers, cocking indicators and tang mounted safety with gold "SAFE". Mounted with a checkered splinter forearm and round knob pistol grip stock with a checkered bare butt with heel and toe plate, gold initial oval and added gold initial shield. Length of pull 14 1/4 inches. Drop at comb is 1 1/2 inches and at heel 2 1/4 inches.

Condition: Refurbished, the barrels and trigger guard with 99% English black finish remaining showing minor pitting under the finish on the rib and on the trigger guard. The frame and side plates retain 99% original finish with some discoloration on the right fence. The wood has been refinished and the checkering professionally recut. The wood remains very good with a few minor dings and dents. The heel and toe plates show some discoloration. The checkering is sharp and the markings are legible. Mechanically excellent. A fine Stephen Grant & Sons best sidelock number 1 of a game bird set.
