Engraved Stephen Grant Side Lock Thumb Lever Damascus Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun with Inscribed Presentation Plaque

Stephen Grant was apprenticed to Kavanagh of Dublin before working with Charles Lancaster and Thomas Boss in London. Manufactured circa 1875 and features a single brass bead sight on smooth concave rib marked "STEPHEN GRANT. 67A ST JAMES'S STREET, LONDON". 2-3/4 inch chambers, chokes gauge at improved cylinder/improved cylinder with an extractor. Damascus barrels. The action, locks, hammers, lever and trigger guard are engraved with tight English scroll and both side locks are marked "STEPHEN GRANT". Double triggers and tang safety. Mounted with multi-point checkered walnut splinter forearm with a horn forend insert and straight grip stock with a flat bare butt and silver initial oval inscribed "INTERNATIONAL/GUN & POLO CLUB/BRIGHTON/AUG.2ND 1876/WON BY/HOWARD S. JAFFRAY". Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches. The shotgun comes with research provided by the consignor including a letter from Atkin Grant & Lang dated January 2, 2014 which describes the shotgun as being a 12 gauge with 30 inch barrels and that it was made for Mr. Howard S. Jaffray Esq. The date of completion is not recorded in the ledger. Also included is a summary of provenance which shows the shotgun delivered to Mr. Jaffray in August of 1876, verification of the silver engraved oval on the stock, a brief history of Howard and the Jaffray family, and ownership up to October of 2013. There are also a number of papers relating to, The International Gun and Polo Club and pigeon shooting competitions.

Fine as period refurbished with 98% brown finish remaining on the barrel and almost all of the Damascus pattern visible. The lever and trigger guard show 95% of the dull blue finish. The hammers have a smooth gray patina. The locks and receiver have a smooth gray patina with very strong amounts of case colors in the protected areas. The wood is very good with a few minor dents on the stock and overall crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically fine.
