Manufactured circa 1857 to 1860. This revolver features approximately 70% coverage of fine, professional, New York style flowing scrolls and punch dot engraving. The engraving extends from the rib of the barrel to each barrel flat, cylinder, frame, back strap, and butt. The top of the rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS". There are no visible assembly numbers on the revolver. Standard blade front and notch rear sights, full silver plating, ivory grips. Complete with an original Smith & Wesson Gutta Percha case with revolver relief lid, as well as "MANUFACTURED ONLY BY / SMITH & WESSON / SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS". Padded dark velvet with decorative scroll design and velvet lined base with cartridge block.
BBL: 3 3/16 inch solid rib
Stock:
Gauge: 22 RF
Finish: silver
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 1639
Condition: Fine as period refinished at the time of engraving with 95% silver plating remaining and showing only minor collector type handling marks. The hammer shows flashes of vibrant case colors. The top strap, trigger and grip screw are finished in a niter blue. The ivory grips are excellent plus showing minor shrinkage along the top edge and exhibiting hairline age cracks on the butt. The left grip strap is stamped with a five pointed star. It is unclear if the star designates the replating or a repair, however it is clear that the revolver had a professional period replate. The gutta percha case is excellent. All reliefs are crisp and clear. The interior is missing one of the revolver blocks but is other wise very fine. The exterior rim exhibits none of the usual chips or cracks. Overall a very handsome cased and ivory stocked 1st 3rd.
