Engraved Purdey & Sons Double Barrel Side Lock Shotgun with Case, Extra Barrels and Accessories

Manufactured circa 1899. The frame, side locks, break lever, forearm hardware and trigger guard are engraved with fine English scroll and rosettes. Each lock is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS" and the underside of the frame is marked "PURDEY'S/PATENT". The shotgun comes with two barrel sets. Both are 28 inches in length, and finished blue with double ivory bead sights and concave solid matte ribs. One set of barrels was manufactured in Belgium around 1920 by Phil Miller for live pigeon shooting. It has 2 3/4 inch chambers, choked modified/full with ejectors. The barrels are numbered to the gun and the flats are marked "DAGUN" and with various Belgium proofmarks. The second set of barrels and stock were made by Purdey circa 1950-1960. This set is chambered 2 3/4 inches, choked full/skeet with ejectors. The top of the left barrel near the breech is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS" and "AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON, ENGLAND." The barrels are numbered to the gun and the barrel flats are marked with the tonnage marking and nitro proofed. The water table is marked with British and Belgian proofmarks. The inside of the forearm hardware is numbered to the gun and marked "6". Consignor noted indicate that the Purdey records indicate this was originally number 6 of a matched set, which in writer's opinion is what the number 6 on the forearm designates. Blue barrels, break lever and trigger guard, coin finished frame and locks, single Miller trigger, cocking indicators, tang mounted automatic safety and mounted with a nicely figured deluxe multi-point checkered walnut semi-beaver tail forearm with engraved hardware and straight grip stock with teardrop flats, solid recoil pad with inscribed gold initial oval. The shotgun comes with a hard leather case with leather straps and brass corner protectors and red felt lining. There is a leather James Purdey & Sons label affixed to the inside of the lid. In the case is a two piece wooden cleaning rod, a screwdriver and extra internal parts. The shotgun also comes with a brief history of the shotgun, invoices and letters reference the refurbishment, a copy of the book "London Gunmakers" by Nigel Brown, signed by the author and Don Masters of Churchill Gunmakers and a copy of the book "Purdey's The Guns And The Family" by Richard Beaumont signed by Don Masters of Churchill Gunmakers. Bores measure .737 (right) and .731 (left), the wall thickness is .027 (right) and .033 (left), the bore constriction is .012 (right) (Mod) and .035 (left) (Full). Length of pull is 14 inches. Drop at the comb is 1 3/8 inches, drop at the heel is 1 1/2 inches, cast off is 3/16 inch.

Very fine as professionally refurbished by Purdey in 1986 (consignor notes). The Purdey barrels retain 95% plum blue finish with some muzzle wear and a few minor scratches. The Dagun barrels retain 98% blue finish with some muzzle wear. The front sight has been repositioned. The trigger guard and break lever retain 99% blue finish. The frame and locks retain 99% plus coin finish. The wood is excellent with a few light dings and handling marks, and crisp checkering. The engraving and markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with some scuffs, wear and stains on the exterior, and some contact wear and a small amount of material loss on the lining.
