Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle
Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured in 1863. The rifle has the early style receiver with rear sight dovetail and first pattern buttplate with rounded spur. The rifle is engraved in the style of Samuel J. Hoggson. The distinctive, standard pattern engraving features large scrolls on a punch-dot background on the side plates, upper surfaces of the receiver and tang and the top of the buttplate. Large flower designs are engraved on both sides of the forward portion of the receiver. The left side plate is engraved with a hound pursuing a buck. The engraved panels on the receiver and side plates have distinctive scalloped borders. The brass receiver and buttplate have a silver, plated finish, the barrel is blued, the hammer and loading lever are casehardened and the highly figured rosewood stock has a high polish varnish finish. The barrel is fitted with a brass, half-moon, front sight and a folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. A factory sling loop is attached to the left side of the barrel and a sling swivel is inlaid in the left side of the stock. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN.CT". Roman (serifed) letters are used for the entire address. The serial number, "2819" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang, on the inside of the buttplate and the shanks of both buttplate screws. The partial serial number "19" is visible in the upper stock tang inlet. Two punch marks are stamped above the serial number on the lower receiver tang.

Very good. The receiver and buttplate retain approximately 20% of the silver-plated finish which is contained mostly in the protected areas. The exposed brass on the receiver and buttplate have a mellow, un-polished patina. The engraving is crisp and deep. The side plate joints are tight. The barrel has an even dove-gray patina with sharp edges and no pitting. The hammer and loading lever have traces of the original mottled case colors. The stock has most of the piano-finish varnish and is in very good condition. The upper tang has an extra filler screw present, possibly for a tang sight which is now absent. The rifle has some indication of professional restoration; the barrel legend has been re-cut and the stock has been professionally repaired at the wrist.
