Engraved John Rigby Side by Side Damascus Barrel Trigger Guard Lever Hammer Shotgun with Case and Accessories

This example was manufactured in 1875. The side plates, hammers, trigger guard, break lever, receiver and forearm hardware have a large amount of tight English floral scroll engraving. The top of the rib is engraved in script "John Rigby & Co Dublin & London" and both side plates are engraved in script "Jno Rigby & Co.". The barrels have a single steel bead sight, are choked cylinder/cylinder and have 2 9/16 inch chambers with an extractor. The bores measure .734 with a wall thickness of .050. The serial number "14159" is marked on the water table, bottom flat of the barrels, inside of the forearm hardware and on the inside of the forearm. The serial number is also engraved on the lower tang. Under lever style action where the lever serves as part of the trigger guard. Mounted on a nicely figured, multi-point checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock with smooth steel buttplate. Length of pull is 14 3/8 inches. With a leather covered takedown hardcase with "GEO. HEPBURN,/LIVERPOOL." embossed on the top, a gold embossed leather label inside, a nickel plated oiler, 2 snap caps, a slide on hand protector embossed "ELEY BROTHERS LTD.", 2 piece cleaning rod, bore brush, bore mop, patch jag, screwdriver and an ivory container holding 2 extra firing pins.

Professionally refinished, the barrels retain 95% plus of the brown finish with some scattered minor scratches, wear and light dings. There is some scattered spots of pitting. The casehardened components retain traces of the case colors with a brown and silvery gray patina on the balance. The engraving remains sharp and well defined. The left hammer has been repaired. The forearm appears original and remains very good with some scratches and dings along with a repaired crack that is barely noticeable. The refinished buttstock is very good with some scattered dings and light scratches. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with scratches, dings and scuffs. The accessories are all very good with the lid on the ivory container having been repaired.
