A) Manufactured circa 1889. The round action, trigger guard, break lever and forearm hardware are engraved with scroll designs. Each side of the action is marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON/PATENT" in a banner and the serial number is on the lower tang. Single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON, 63 PRINCES STREET, EDINBURGH". The under side of the barrels are marked with a British proof mark and "MAXIMUM CHOKE" and the flats are marked "NITRO PATENT PROOF", "1 1/8 OZ", "12/C" in a diamond "J D&S" and the matching serial number. The water table is marked with two "crown/V" proof marks, the matching serial number and "J.D&S/624/PATENT" in an oval. Casehardened action and blue remaining parts. 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. Double triggers, tang mounted automatic safety with gold "SAFE" and mounted with a checkered walnut splinter forearm and straight grip stock with a 5/8 inch wooden buttplate with checkered bare butt and gold initial oval. The two guns come in a hard leather case with leather straps and handle, and green felt lining with John Dickson & Son makers label affixed to the inside of the lid. The case has a removable upper compartment which houses the rifle and the shotgun is stored below. In the case are two snap caps, 4 rounds of 500 NE ammunition, a casing sizer and a two piece wooden cleaning rod. Bores measure .738 (right) and .734 (left), the wall thickness is .026 (right) and .025 (left), the bore constriction is .012 (right) (LM) and .021 (left) (Mod). Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches, drop at the comb is 1 3/8 inches, drop at the heel is 2 5/16 inches, and cast off is 1/4 inch.

Very good as refinished. The barrels and trigger guard retain 98% blue finish showing edge wear on the trigger guard and some minor thinning on the muzzles. The break lever retains 95% original blue finish. The action has a smooth silver patina. The wood is excellent with light handling marks and crisp checkering. There is some corrosion on the initial oval. The markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically fine. The case is good with scuffs, scratches and stains on the exterior. The leather straps show heavy wear and the handle shows moderate wear. The lining is very good.

B) Blade front and two leaf (one folding, one fixed) rear sights on the solid matte rib, and a sling eye mounted on the underside of the barrel. The underside of the barrel is marked with the number "39" and various British proof marks, and the flat is marked with the matching serial number and ""J.D & S/120/PATENT" in an oval. The receiver, barrel release lever, under lever, forearm hardware, upper tang and grip cap are engraved with fine English scroll designs. The right side of the receiver is marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON/PATENT", the serial number is on the lower tang and the front of the receiver under the barrel is marked the same as the barrel flat. Blue barrel and casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a checkered buttplate. Length of pull is 14 3/8 inches, drop at the comb is 1 7/8 inches, drop at the heel is 2 7/8 inches, and cast off is 1/8 inch.

Very good as partially refinished, the barrel retains 98% blue finish with some wear on the muzzle and a couple areas of minor pitting under the finish. The remaining surfaces have a gray and silver patina with scattered strong traces of original case colors, and most of the original case colors remaining on the inside of the trigger guard. The wood is very good with a repaired chip on the stock toe and the buttplate is warped at the toe. Overall there are some minor handling marks and crisp checkering. The initial oval appears to have been put in the stock at a later date and there is a hole for a sling swivel. The engraving and markings are clear.
