Engraved J.D. Dougall London Double Barrel Pinfire Lock Fast Shotgun

This is a James Dalzell Dougall side by side pinfire shotgun with the famous Dougall lock fast closing mechanism that uses a cam operating lever which breaks open the barrels and slides the barrels back. In theory the lock fast design was to create a tighter seal around the shotgun shell when compared to other designs of the day. The brown twist barrels feature 2 1/2 inch chambers, a single bead sight and a solid concave rib marked "J.D. DOUGALL INVENTOR & PATENTEE 59St. JAMES'S St. LONDON" with the scroll engraved fast lock lever mounted on the right side of the frame. Both sides of the water table are marked with the serial number, "PATENT/LOCK FAST" and a "crown/V" proof. The frame, hammers, lock plates, trigger guard and forearm hardware are all scroll engraved with the lock plates marked "J.D. DOUGALL" in a banner and the underside of the frame marked "J.D. DOUGALL'S/PATENT LOCK FAST". Mounted with a nicely figured straight grip stock with multi-point checkering on the forearm (nearly full coverage) and wrist and a single barrel wedge. The buttstock has a bare checkered butt with toe and heel plates featuring floral blossom engraved screws with each plate having a single screw. Length of pull is 14 1/2 inches.

Very fine as professionally refurbished. The barrels retain nearly all of the brown twist pattern and the trigger and buttstock toe and heel plates retain nearly all of the blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain 70% of the case colors. The wood is excellent with a few minor handling marks and a few blemishes in the overall crisp recut checkering. The engraving is crisp. Mechanically excellent.
