Engraved Isaac Hollis & Sons Breech Loading Percussion Target Rifle

Starting in the first half of the 19th century as Hollis Brothers & Company, Hollis & Sons was a supplier of pistols and shotguns, and also produced muskets for the North American Indian trade. This percussion rifle features an octagon barrel with a solid rib and under rail. The rib has 8 folding leaf sights marked "100" to "800" with silver inlaid sighting lines. Ahead of the leafs the top of the rib are gold inlaid markings which consist of a gold inlaid band across the rib and gold inlaid numbers 9 through 20. There is a dovetailed raised blade front sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with a small number "52" and three British proof marks. The lock, trigger guard, top of the breech block and patch box are engraved with a fine floral scroll design. The lock is marked "I. HOLLIS & SONS". The under rib is fitted with two ramrod pipes with a sling eye on the rear pipe. The barrel appears to have been bright with casehardened remaining parts. Mounted with a one piece walnut pistol grip half-stock with an iron shotgun buttplate, patch box and sling eye. Comes with a NEI and RCBS marked two cavity bullet mold and wooden ramrod with extra rod tip in patch box.

Fair. The barrel and ribs have a mottled gray patina with overall moderate pitting. The replacement hammer shows much of the fading case colors. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock is good as revarnished with some gouges on the left side of the buttstock, and overall minor dents, dings and scratches. The bullet mold appears assembled with rust on the arms and discoloration on the aluminum blocks. The markings and engraving are clear. The action is excellent.
