Engraved Holland & Holland Royal Hammerless Sidelock Side by Side Shotgun with Case
This is a nice example of an early Holland & Holland Royal Hammerless shotgun manufactured in 1883. Single bead sight on the concaved smooth solid rib, marked "HOLLAND & HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND STREET LONDON" reading breech to muzzle. 2 3/4 inch chambers, barrels gauge at full/cylinder with extractor. Brown Damascus barrels, casehardened action and side plates, blue trigger guard and break lever and niter blue triggers and safety lever. The action, side plates, trigger guard, forearm hardware have a simple vine border with HOLLAND & HOLLAND" in a banner with fine English scroll at each end. The barrel flats are marked with various British proof marks, the water table is marked "PATENT ACTION", the breech face is marked "PAT GAS CHECK / No 747" and the break lever is marked "PATENT". Double triggers, cocking indicators, tang mounted safety and mounted with fancy grained oiled finished checkered walnut splinter forearm with lightly engraved hardware and straight grip stock with a checkered black horn buttplate and silver initial oval. Complete in a brown leather and oak takedown case with brass corner protectors and hardware, double leather straps, leather handle and green felt lining with Holland & Holland label affixed to the inside of the lid and two nickel snap caps. Length of pull is 14 5/8 inch. The accompanying Holland & Holland Weapon history letter verifies the serial number, gauge, model with addition of "(No. 2 - Plain)", states chokes as choke left, cylinder right, 14 3/8 inch stock length, 6 lbs 13 oz. for weight and 1883 manufacture date.

Condition: Professionally refurbished. The barrels show 80% of the thin brown finish with almost all of the Damascus pattern remaining. The side plates retain all of the bright case colors, the frame retains 98% bright case colors with smooth gray behind the safety lever and all of the blue and niter blue finishes remain. There is a chip repair on the rear of the forearm, otherwise light handling marks and crisp checkering. The case is excellent with a couple sewn repairs in the lining.
