Engraved Early Charles Daly Diamond Grade Side by Side Damascus Barrel Shotgun

This attractive example has expertly executed tight floral scroll engraving on the receiver, break lever, trigger guard and forearm hardware. The bottom of the receiver is engraved with a buck roe deer with mountains in the background, the trigger plate is engraved with a male and female Auerhahn on a hill with trees and mountains in the background, and the trigger guard is engraved with a fox crouched down and observing two ducks floating on a lake. The top of the matted solid rib is engraved "CHARLES DALY EXTRA FINE DAMASCUS BARRELS DIAMOND QUALITY" and the bottom of both barrels are stamped with a crown over two crossed pistols (a Lindner marking) next to the word "SAXONY". The barrels have a single steel bead sight, are choked .025/.025 and the chambers measure 3 inches long with ejectors. Fitted with double set triggers, a tang mounted safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking . The serial number is engraved on the lower tang and is stamped on the water table, inside of the trigger plate, on the bottom flat of the barrels and on the inside of the forearm hardware. Mounted on a nicely figured, multi-point checkered walnut forearm with horn forend insert and round knob pistol grip stock with checkered teardrop flats, horn grip cap insert, blank initial oval and a solid red rubber recoil pad. Length of pull is 14 3/4 inches.

Very fine, the barrels retain 80% plus of the original brown finish with a few scattered minor spots of pitting, a small cleaned area and some scattered minor scratches and dings. 95% of the Damascus pattern is visible. The casehardened components retain traces of the original case colors in the protected areas with some small areas of brown discoloration and a smooth gray patina on the balance. The forearm is fine with the horn forend insert detached but included, two tight hairline cracks at the bottom rear and some scattered minor chips and slivers absent from the edges. The buttstock is also fine with scattered dings, dents, scratches along with several tight hairline cracks at the top tang, heel and toe. The recoil pad is hard and cracked from age. Mechanically excellent.
