Engraved D. & J. Fraser Drop Block Single Shot Rifle with Scope and Extra Barrel

Initially setting up shop at Greenside Place, Daniel Fraser later went into business with his brother John to form D. & J. Fraser and moved the business to Leith Street Terrace. Around 1889 Daniel and John dissolved their business with each continuing to trade as separate Edinburgh gun makers. Blade front and two leaf (one folding, one fixed), rear sights on the matte solid rib marked "D&J FRASER,/4 LEITH ST. TERRACE./EDINBURGH" ahead of the rear sight. The barrel rib is fitted with a D&J Fraser scope marked "D&J FRASER/GUN & RIFLE MAKERS/EDINBURGH" and "SOLE PATENTEES & MANUFACTURERS". The action, breechblock lever, trigger guard, forearm latch assembly and sides of the safety switch (located directly ahead of the trigger) are engraved with fine English scroll work. The matching serial number is marked on the trigger guard, bottom of the barrel under the forearm and on the inside of the forearm. The barrel is blue, and the action, trigger guard and forearm latch assembly are casehardened. Mounted with a nicely figured multi-point walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and steel shotgun style buttplate. Comes with an extra 26 inch 35 caliber blue finished barrel numbered to the gun with a beaded blade front sight, three leaf (one fixed, two folding) rear sight and dovetailed scope mount bases. The barrel is marked the same as the other.

Very fine as partially refinished (the barrel), which retains 98% blue finish remaining, showing some wear and dings on the muzzle, and a few scattered minor dings. Much of the original blue remains on the safety lever. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The wood is very good with a small chip on the forend, and some scattered minor dings and handling marks. There is a crack on each side of the wrist at the lower tang, which extend from the tang upward into the wrist. The checkering remains crisp. The scope is good with almost all of the original finish remaining, has slightly hazy optics and the vertical cross hair is absent. The extra barrel is very good with 85% blue finish remaining, showing some muzzle wear and some wear from the forearm and an area on each side at the breech end that have had some rust cleaned off leaving some minor pitting and a silver gray.
