Engraved Colt SAA revolver, .44 RF cal., 7-1/2” barrel, nickel finish, raised carved Mexican snake and eagle ivory grips, #1891. This gun is in overall good condition showing a great untouched appearance with approx. 10% nickel finish remaining in protected areas with the balance of the Colt gone to a dark brown patina with scattered areas of wear, erosion and pin prick pitting; the engraving is period New York-style with excellent coverage; the action is very good, the bore fair; all matching visible serial numbers, three line patent address on left side of frame with all markings clear; the grips are finely worn and accomplished and appear to have been with this gun for most of its life as several loss areas match with erosion and pitting to the inner back straps where the old losses are exposed. The way true collectors love to find these old Southwest Single Action Colts. This SAA revolver, #1891 is pictured in Wilson’s “Book of Colt Engraving”, page 277 which also states “shipped by the Colt plant in March of 1880 to Hartley & Graham, New York; finish, barrel length, and stocks not listed. Revolver was finished and engraved on H & G order, the grips fitted were of Mexican eagle carved ivory . . .”. Est.: $15,000-$30,000.
