Engraved Civil War Colt 4th Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, #108231, .36 cal., 7.5'' octagonal barrel with pin front and (hammer notch) rear sights, marked with maker's name and ''U.S. America'' address in one line on top flat, has hinged loading lever beneath; round 6-shot cylinder is unmarked but for engraving; open-top frame is marked ''Colt's/Patent'' at left-front; two-piece brass gripstraps with one-piece varnished walnut grips. Early-war mfg. in 1861, with blued barrel, cylinder and trigger, case hardened lever, frame and hammer, silver-plated gripstraps. Revolver exhibits overall very fine and profuse floral with punch-dot-background engraving (non-factory but likely done in the period) of excellent quality, including dashed-line barrel address border with pineapple top finial, line borders around wedge, screws and ''Colt's Patent'' frame marking, and sunbursts at top and sides of backstrap. Condition is good to very good as configured, with mostly sharp engraving and clear markings, no original finishes (being overall smooth gunmetal gray with occasional small/light nicks and age-toned brass). Sound grips show highpoint wear, rounding, nicks and hammer marks at butt, and approx. 70% varnish. Cylinder has no original scene or other markings but more recent scroll engraving with approx. 80% thin blue refinish, replaced nipples and safety pins. All visible serial numbers match including the wedge and lever. Action is smooth, bore is clean with overall frosting and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
