Engraved Colt 1878 Sheriff's Model Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips
This is a Colt 1878 DA "Sheriff's Model" revolver that has been engraved in the classic Cuno Helfricht pattern of scrolls and geometric designs with a punch dot background shading with rosettes. The serial number of this revolver (12926) places the production in early 1885. The engraving covers approximately 75% plus of the overall metal surfaces of the pistol. This revolver has also been fitted with a set of genuine Mother of Pearl grips. The revolver is fitted with an original and super rare 4 inch Sheriff model barrel, without the ejector housing and the revolver is NOT fitted with a lanyard loop on the butt, which is correct for the Sheriff's model for this model. The top of the barrel has the correct, short, two line Colt markings that consist of "COLTS PT. F. A. MFG. Co/HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." and the left side of the barrel is has the very desirable "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" etched barrel and the left front section of the trigger guard bow is correctly marked "44 CF". The barrel engraving consists of the large scroll engraving on both sides of the barrel that frames or outlines the Colt markings on the left side with a geometric engraved pattern on top of the barrel around the two-line address that extends to the front end on each side of the barrel. The frame has the traditional scroll engraving pattern on the rear section of the frame with the traditional Helfricht geometric engraved pattern on the front half of the frame and top strap with star-burst pattern on each side of the chamber area of the frame. The left side of the frame has a large Helfricht rosette pattern that covers the entire side plate cover. The geometric pattern of engraving is also located on the upper rear section of the frame that extends down the back strap, inside the front grip strap and on top of the trigger guard bow. The cylinder is also engraved with a traditional Helfricht pattern that consists of an alternating, scroll engraving and geometric design engraved pattern between the flutes on the sides of the cylinder. The lower left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt factory assembly number "104" and which is partially visible on the loading gate. As noted, it has been fitted with a set of genuine Mother of Pearl grips.
BBL: 4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40
Finish:
Grips: mother of pearl
Serial Number: 12926
Condition: Very good overall, the revolver has been chemically cleaned, leaving a smooth metal finish. There is some very minor erosion or fine pitted areas on the sides of the frame around the push pin area, trigger guard bow and on the front grip strap. However the Helfricht pattern engraving and Colt factory markings are all clear and visible. The barrel address, though, has been restamped. The Mother of Pearl grips are in fine condition with nice color on both sides with a couple of minor age on the front edge of the right grip with the lower rear section of the left grips showing an old professional repair.
