English School, Edith Loibl at the Age of Seven, 1874/75
The present portrait depicts a girl in a light blue velvet dress trimmed with lace. Her little Maltese with shaggy white fur sits on the tablecloth and accompanies her. The green and red colored ball on the edge of the dining table refers to their play and renders the bourgeois environment of the indicated living room a playful atmosphere.

The portrait depicts Edith Marion Loibl, an ancestor of the consignor’s family, and shows her at the age of seven years. The piece was painted in 1874/75 in London, where the family used to live, and was lately brought to Austria. Within the owners family the painting has been traditionally ascribed to Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens (1823-1906), a well-known and sought-after portraitist of the 19th century.

The paintings is inscribed and dated with pencil on the reverse ‘[…] London. 1875’. The canvas is wavy and shows a few fine tears up to 3 cm and tiny holes; these damages have been partly restored and supported from the backside. There are fine marks on the edges, where the frame has rubbed, several tears caused by the pressure of the stretcher are affecting the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching under the eyes of the girl and throughout the painting. The gilded frame shows small traces of age and use and measures 183 x 143 cm. The size of the stretcher is 153 x 114.5 cm.
