This English ironstone plate is a real find!
Its decor is largely a deep forest green with smaller and larger cartouches with blue-stencilled Chinese urns and figures in cobalt. Many of the cartouches are accented with flow blue.

The center of the plate is ironstone white; here, the stencilling continues with flowers and hints of Chinoiserie in pagodas, bamboo sticks, and flowers. The edge of the center is outlined with cobalt in a pagoda-like upturned corner motif. This type of design--with the predominance of color amid Chinese-influenced aspects--was used since the mid-18th century by companies such as Bow China.

The plate is 8 5/8 inches in diameter and 3/4-inches high with a footrim. The rim of the body of the plate as well as the edge of the forest green paint is slightly scalloped.

The plate is in excellent condition with nearly all of the paint intact. This is remarkable considering its age.

The base of the plate shows a maker's mark with a large shield without the name of the maker. This shield is surrounded on both sides with lions. Away from the center, however, the words "REAL IRONSTONE CHINA" are incised.

This will make a stunning addition to an English ironstone collection!
