English/Irish school, 19th Century
An Album of Views of England and Ireland.
Oblong leather bound album (10.5 x 13.5 inches), containing 72 pencil drawings all dating from 1843-1853, and virtually all titled. Thirty-three of the views are taken in Ireland, primarily Co. Wicklow, during a week's visit in 1843. Included are views of Poulaphouca, the Dargle, Glen of the Downs, Blessington, Glendalough and Bray, as well as one of the Salmon Leap, Leixlip and two of Lucan, Co. Dublin. Amongst the English works are interesting views of bathing huts at Dover beach, the Crystal Palace, Necton in Norfolk, Yarmouth, Louth in Lincolnshire and four views of Farm Hill Park in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The drawings are far superior in technique to the average "artistic tourist" and the inclusion of a woman sketching in the foreground gives rise to speculation regarding the sex of the anonymous artist. An interesting lot. Note: a list is available of the titles of each sketch.
