Antique English Fullstock Percussion Infantry Musket, or Fowler, assembled utilizing some parts from an earlier British ''Brown Bess'' flintlock musket, NVSN, approx. .80 cal., 39.25'' barrel with a small post front and raised grooved rear sights (and remnant of a top bayonet lug behind front sight) marked with Birmingham proofmarks and ''D/1848'' at breech; large iron lockplate with pointed teat at rear is marked with a prominent ''(crown)/GR'' under hammer and ''Tower'' in a vertical curve at rear; brass furniture including triggerguard with acorn front and long rear tangs, serpentine sideplate (missing), heavy buttplate marked ''4908'', and three fancy fluted thimbles retaining the tulip-head iron ramrod; hardwood fullstock with carved comb. Condition is good+, the steel parts with a deep brown age patina, heavy black powder pitting at barrel breech, and generally legible markings, the brass with age toning. Stock is solid with the expected marks from age and military use, cracks emanating from bottom of butt, and what appears to be worm erosion at top, particularly on right side. Action does not hold full-cock; smoothbore with deep rust but clean. Perhaps intended for colonial or trade use. Est.: $400-$700. (Antique)
