This lovely antique (19th century) platter features painted Japanese decoration in the Imari palette, and is believed to be an example of English Staffordshire earthenware or stoneware, or possibly Japanese export porcelain. Could also be of Dutch, French or Italian origin. Painted red marks under glaze include a small " a ", the number " 172 " and number "5" or letter "s" with dot above. Measures an impressive 19.5" long and 15.5" wide and weighs an estimated 6-10 lbs. Overall condition is excellent. There are two very small chips from the front edge. This item resides on the upper west side of Manhattan ( New York city ) and may be seen by appointment.
