German Romantic composer (1854–1921) best known for the opera Hansel und Gretel. Crystal-clear 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait by Elvira of Munchen, blindstamped 1898 in the lower left corner, showing Humperdinck in three-quarter length pose seated in a chair, signed and inscribed in ink in the upper blank area, “E. Humperdinck, fur Mrs Eliot Hubland, Berlin, 1907,” adding two bars of music above his name. In fine condition, with a few trivial surface scuffs.

Humperdinck started the 20th century in Berlin teaching, composing operas, and writing Shakespearean incidental music for the theater. Two of his most successful works were created the same year he graced this portrait with his signature—with music for both ‘As You Like It’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ composed in 1907. A terrific combination of pose, inscription, and music. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
