Extraordinary “Ribbed Frame” Thirty Cents “J. Gault”
The Single Finest Example Of Only Two Known

EP-179, HB-140, S-100a, Reed-JG30RB. Thirty Cents. J. GAULT. “Ribbed Frame” Type. Choice Extremely Fine.

Rated as Rarity-9 (1 of 2 Known) according to Fred Reed. This example is the Finest of Only Two Known. It is an excessively rare as a high denomination, and a known, listed “Ribbed Frame” variety. This is the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Sale specimen, Part IV, June 23, 2004, Lot 513 (no insert tag present). The only other example known was sold in the Frederick Mayer Collection, which overall does not come near to the quality of this current specimen. The rich orange 30¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp is very original in color with just a hint of tone. The stamp is very well centered, attractive and seen under perfectly clear, unbroken mica. The “Ribbed” frame detail is sharp with every tiny “ribbing” distinct and clear. The case is impressive, defect-free with an excellent natural chestnut tone. The mica quality is vastly superior to that of the Mayer example by a very considerable margin.
All 30¢ denomination Encased Postage Stamps are rare and quite undervalued in the collector market. This remarkable example is worth many multiples of that “common” type value. It is simply the Finest Known of only Two Existent. Ex: Stack’s John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Sale, Part IV, June 23, 2004, Lot 513 (no insert tag present).
